Green Darkness Rediscovered Classics Anya Seton Books

Like Jerri, this is one of my favorites. I have read it so many times that I have worn out two hardcopy editions, so I was thrilled when I was able to purchase a Kindle edition.

Well, I'm 85% of the way through. Having re-read this book many times for more than 40 years, I know it so well that the errors in the Kindle version are glaring, and jarring. They run the gamut from a missing letter, or a wrong letter, to missing words. I am actually more than disappointed with the lack of quality assurance in the conversion; I am disgusted.

Perhaps first-time readers won't mind, as they will still get all of the story, but to people like me, for whom this is an old, old, favorite, I would get more enjoyment out of reading my old tattered copy. I suppose I should be grateful I didn't spend nearly ten dollars for it. Oh, wait, I did.

One last thing: this is not the only Kindle version of a beloved book in which I have spotted multiple, serious errors of transcription. Doesn't anyone proofread this stuff before offering it for sale?

Green Darkness Rediscovered Classics Anya Seton Books Reviews

Anya Seton does a ton of research before she writes. I've been it Ightham Mote and seen the hidden hole. Very scary. Nice to hear the whole story.

Anya creates such wonderful characters, in whom you become involved. I read "Katherine" in the 1970's and have been doing British medieval research including trips to England as a result.
I read this book once a year. The book to me is a comfort. I was drawn to this book by the storyline of reincarnation. It also put me in Tudor times, because I feel like I'm living the story myself. I first read this book when it was published in the 70's. It was lost to me in one of my many moves. I tried to get another copy, but found that it was out of print. Luckily, I found my original. I'm so glad that this book is now available on . If you like historical novels maybe this could become your favorite too.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. I have read it so many times you would think I would grow tired of it. But every few years I read it again. The writing is superb and the characters are so well developed that you become completely absorbed in their world. I should say "worlds" since this is a tale of past and present coming together. The atmosphere of the book is so detailed that I actually have to shake my head a few times to come back to reality whenever I have to put the book down. And I must say it is nearly impossible to put this book down once you begin to read. The only other book I can think of that I have lost myself in to this same degree is Jane Eyre. I have recommended this book to many people over the years and all have loved it as much as I do - almost.
I read this book about 40 years ago. Just finished reading it again and loved it just as much. I was rather disappointed in the quality of print which made some pages difficult to read. I don't recall any misspelled words in the first copy I had, but there was in this one. It is a very good book. You'll have a hard time putting it down. If you're interested in 1500's England, and the 1960's you'll enjoy this book. It does deal with reincarnation, so if that's offensive to you, don't get it.
I first read this book in my teens, and have periodically reread it since then. Although some of the story set in 1968 now feels dated, at the time it was published it was then contemporary. To me it makes for a much more interesting type of read.

Celia doesn't have much to her, 1968 version, but I was okay with that. The whole idea of reincarnation is that people will learn, over the next few lifetimes, the lessons they failed in the past, or perhaps atone for viciousness or evil.

This book is where I fell in love with Tudor England; the intrigue, the danger, the confusion of those like elderly Lady Ursula, apt to be arrested for saying the reflexive phrase "By Our Lady" she'd used all her life. I could smell the fresh rushes, share the excitement of a pretty new dress, feel the repulsion of Celia at Leonard Dacre's crude advances, and her longing for Stephen, both a pure and impure love. I truly felt like I was transported back in time along with Celia Marsdon. I both wanted to stay there AND get the hell out of Dodge before Dudley's people, or Mary's, locked me up or worse.
You may not believe in reincarnation or mysticism , but this story will plunge you right into the lives of Richard/Stephen and the Celia of 1968 and of the 16th century Celia. I found this to be an emotionally draining read due to the tragic end of the earlier lovers , although we do get a satisfactory resolution for Richard and Celia in 1968. Also, of great interest is the skilful weaving of Tudor history and culture of that period and how it effected the lives of the characters. This is another great Seton novel !
I read this book as a teenager in the 1970’s. It drew me into a time long past and began my adventures and interest in reading historical novels. The characters were haunting and I’ve never forgotten them. I read every book Anya Seton wrote. They were available then.
Now in my early 60’s I reread this book again. The story still holds strong and has an even deeper flavor since I’ve aged. I appreciate the characters and their challenges even more now.
I would recommend this book to all ages. The young may fight against the reality of ‘gray’ so it’s good food for thought for them. The elders will appreciate the ‘gray’ and be comforted.
What is the ‘gray’? Read this book to find out.
Where ever you are Anya-thank you for lighting the Green Darkness.
