Stokes, Rebecca. The Harsh Reality Blues. Flagstaff: West Fork Publishing, 1997.

The Harsh Reality Blues is a self-development book directed to high school teens. Rebecca Stokes, who during high school got pregnant at 17 years of age and did not know anything about the "real world," writes this book. Stokes shares her experiences and how hard the real world was for her. In the book she discusses money, legal and physical issues you may run into, and ways to help you get through this troubling time. For instance, while referring to the "Melancholy Blues," she provides help by suggesting the person replace negative thought with positive ones and to go out and do things. In the book, she also shows you employment information such as how to find a job, filling out applications, how to keep your job, and if you want, how to leave a job. With money, she shows such things as the cost of living on your own and how to budget your life.

The Harsh Reality Blues is a great book for teens to read. It gives you a glimpse of the real world. It makes you think about things you, most of the time, have not like dealing with stress and depression. She also gives great suggestions on how to deal with adult issues. I recommend this book to all teens. In the book, Stokes does a very good job explaining things in a way that teens can understand and relate to. Stokes also connects to the reader by telling about things that have happened to her personally. You know that a person who has had these experiences throughout the book wrote it, not just someone who thinks they know what others should do. Although I liked the book a lot, I felt that her section on budgeting was unrealistic because she only speaks of budgeting in certain specific locations, however each person's lifestyle, job circumstances, etc., need to be considered. Take Durango, for example; in the book she says that rent would cost about 500 dollars, but we all know in Durango this is NOT TRUE. In Durango, living circumstances are different because pay is low and cost of living is high. I think she should have taken that into consideration. Overall, I liked this book. It gave me a realistic view of what to expect after high school.

Harsh Reality Blues A Survivor Guide to the Real World Rebecca M Stokes 9780965526449 Books Reviews

"The Harsh Reality Blues" provides young adults with an excellently documented and thoroughly readable resource. It deals with the topics we so often assume kids will learn about in school, but so rarely do.
This book describes, in detail, life on your own. It talks about the various obstacles one will face when becoming independent, and some good ways to deal with them. Miller Stokes covers food, money, clothing, college expenses, health, nutrition and the pros and cons of owning an automobile. She describes how she faced her problems, but also how one should plan ahead so that they don't run into as many of these problems.
This book is well written in a format that makes it easy for teenagers to understand the content and the language. She uses examples from her life to show that she has been through these obstacles, and uses advice to help others avoid these obstacles. This book is a boost of confidence because it opens your mind up to so many new ideas, and realistic methods of living. Many will enjoy this book just because it gives them a heads up about what is out there and waiting for them.
