Doing the right thing ain’t cheap…not when you’ve got to pay the devil’s due.

After a lab explosion leaves him changed forever, wanted fugitive Jack Carson knows only one thing for certain; he’s just one wrong move away from a fate worse than death. Struggling to make sense of life on the run, Jack assumes that middle-of-nowhere, Iowa would be the safest place to lay low. But small towns can hide big secrets.

When a free drink and a misguided act of chivalry blows the town’s sleepy veneer straight to hell, Jack is left to deal with the mess. Blackmailed into criminal service by a backwoods gangster with delusions of grandeur, Carson finds himself faced with the ultimate choice…save the town or save his own skin.

Can Jack use his otherworldly powers to rescue the town’s beautiful bar owner and bring the small town mob to their knees? Or will a pair of ambitious federal agents find him before he has the chance?

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I understand the author had just started publishing a year ago but this was already his fourth? book and first of a new series. This one fascinated me enough to try out and I was not disappointed. The story itself goes back to something I crave in my favorites which is to have something of the fantastic/paranormal/legendary genre happening within a, somewhat, normal setting. The author(s) did a great job of weaving in and out of the heroes mysterious back story, which we still don't fully know, while distracting the reader with a immediate issue which needs dealt with. There were a couple of typos in the middle to two-thirds area which only mildly distracted me but honestly I was too wrapped up to stop. Plus this is a fast read. I technically started it over a week ago when I was just taking a peek in passing since I didn't have my other books with me at that time. That peek turned into the first 25% in about an hour. However, I had to put it down to finish my other books before coming back to it this week which only took another two days to read. Now I'm anxious to see what takes place next and find out more of our hero's history!

Gripping. Fast-paced. Awesome.
Great read, very fast paced, loved the story! I just felt like I could never put it down. A very suspenseful action novel!
Solid characters and complex relational dynamics with an edge of sci-fi. The story settings are dark, suspenseful and interesting. The careful, detailed descriptions really drop you right into this penumbrant world.
Enjoyed this book and quickly got sucked into the story line. A nice, quick read.
A nice fast paced thriller. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Fast paced action with flair. Felt like reading a Jack Reacher book with a little dash of superhero thrown in for measure. Loved it, can't wait for the next one.
A quick and action packed read. Read it in two trips to the gym and lost a few pounds while reading!

This one ticked all of the boxes. This is the reason for only four stars. The book had everything, but some elements were not given their due. It seemed as if certain things were there just to be the "good samaritan" or "angry police captain" or "quirky best friend" character. I know, not all of these characters are actually in the book, I am merely making an example.

I would like to read more. And I will!
