Bloodstream Tess Gerritsen 9780671016760 Books

I loved this story. It had the suspense of a Stephen King thriller and the fast paced action of James Patterson. The characters were well developed and tugged at your heart strings by the end of the story.

This story begins with people who are flawed and have personal trials and tradgedies to overcome. The main characters, Claire Elliot and her son Noah have tried to begin anew after the death of Claire's husband to lymphoma. Noah is having difficulty and hates being uprooted from his home and friends in Baltimore and moved to a remote lakeside community where outsiders are viewed suspiciously. Claire is a family practice physician and has bought the practice of the recently deceased local doctor.

Then the violence starts. Teenagers are becoming uncontrollable and are fighting each other. Soon the killings start. A boy in Noahs class shoots his teacher and several students. Another boy slaughers his family.

Claire learns that this has happened before. Fifty two years ago, another teen slaughtered his family. The indians of the local area won't live near the lake and Claire learns that their indian name for the lake is Stream of Slaughter.

While this is happening, Claire is running into opposition from at least one doctor from a nearby town. Then there is a letter being sent to her patients asking them to question their decisions to continue to see Claire as their doctor.

The problems esculate, while Claire tries to find out the cause.

There are betrayals, twists and turns. I couldn't put the book down once I started it.

I recommend this book to anyone who loved fast paced adventure that doesn't skimp on character development.

Bloodstream Tess Gerritsen 9780671016760 Books Reviews

Bloodstream was my first Tess Gerritsen novel, and I will definitely give others a try.

This interesting thriller did have some cliche elements to it, but somehow, they seemed to lend familiarity to the tale, rather than a feeling of "been there before."

The action is thrilling, however, and the science interesting.

All told, a novel which caught my imagination and I spent a great deal of time the past few days trying to find the chance to read more.
The heroine of the story isn't likable and the ending was a let down from an otherwise good book.
Not my favorite of Tess Gerritsen. Although the story was interesting to start I personally do not like getting the medical explanation so early in the book. We found out so early on what the mystery was, it was no longer a mystery novel, but a boring story about a small town. I will continue to read her work, because I am still a fan.
LOVE Tess' books! They are fabulous medical murder mysteries - fairly graphic and very knowledgeable in regards to descriptions. There is only a little "love"... mostly kissing and sleeping together but no graphic details so not out of place & does not deter from the main novel; just adds beautifully to it!
When teen-agers in a small Maine village start going feral and killing each other as well as adults, Claire, the new local GP, knows something is amiss. And it is story repeating. The village has a skeleton in the closet, and it involves murders in autumn. What is happening? Why do the kids suddenly turn violent? Why are so many people making life hell for Claire? Gerritsen creates great thrillers that chill you to the bone. You can tell she is a doctor herself - her medical descriptions are spot on and give credibility to her stories. I loved this one and highly recommend it to any thriller lovers out there.
I've read a lot of Tess Gerritsen's books and found this one OK. The prologue was definitely exciting enough to reel you in, but then the plot fizzled to a slow start. Finally the story got going, but then there was an abrupt ending, like there was suddenly a limit on the number of pages left. However, the middle was pretty good. Not her best book, but a good read. The story is about a Baltimore family practitioner who moves to a small town in Maine to remove her son from the bad influence of his peers, only to get embroiled in a rash of uncharacteristic teenage violence.
I read about 3-4 books a month. Naturally they all are not great, like this one. When I get lucky and come across a kindle special like "Bloodstream" it is like hitting a home run. I ret cause afford all of Dr Gerritsens books but I get every kindle book sends one I can.

like ALL her books there are some words of caution to new readers. Don't start reading at night if don't want to be up all night looking for a good place to break. There aren't any, all her books will keep you at the edge of your seat. The best way to read her books is to start at the beginning of a long weekend and enjoy the the ride

Purge Sofi Oksanen Lola Rogers 9780802170774 Books

Using the pulsing narrative techniques of Nordic noir, Sofi Oksanen has crafted a complex and riveting account of what happened to an ordinary family in Estonia after Hitler and Stalin took an interest in the tiny Baltic state. The 2008 flap snap of Oksanen shows her to be a beautiful 33, yet she writes with authority about life in this battlefield of a country before, during and after World War II and before, during and after the Cold War.

The novel illuminates the impossible position people found themselves in when empire-building neighbors fought bitterly over their soil. Amid this geopolitical turmoil, two sisters’ romantic rivalry has weighty consequences over many decades. Brainy Aliide’s entire life is devoted to her love for her beautiful sister Ingel’s husband Hans. Aliide cruelly engineers a separation, but this does not bring her happiness. In fact, many years later it brings her comeuppance in the form of a grand-daughter she never knew existed.

Psychological crime novels from Scandinavia have attracted many readers in recent years, but “Purge” is actually about something beyond criminal horror. The creepy feeling you get turning Oksanen’s pages grows out of the reality she conveys. She convinces you that this is the way it was in that time and place.

Purge Sofi Oksanen Lola Rogers 9780802170774 Books Reviews

Ouch!
This complex and somewhat convoluted novel begins with a disheveled young girl (quickly revealed to be a sex-trafficking victim) appearing in the front yard of a woman living in a remote village of Estonia.
Eventually, as the story's complex relationships unfold over 3 generations spanning 1930-1990 (roughly), it is revealed that they are related.
Once a reader becomes engaged in the book (it took me about 50 pages because of the odd leaps back and forth in time), the suspense is relentless as the two women slowly come to understand the dark and shameful history that binds them.
Love, loss, lust, shame, guilt, murder, tragedy, rivalry, deceit during the occupation of Estonia by the USSR...and and exploration of the ends to which people had to go (and did) in order to survive.
Riveting reading, excellent writing...and very, very sad.
I found the central character of Aliinde to be confusing. She was very self-centered, jealous and vindictive, and the Communist takeover of her country, Estonia, gave her the opportunity to be as evil as she could manage to be. It isn't surprising that she marries a repulsive Communist agent for her own protection, nor that she would connive in getting rid of the sister that is married to the man she herself loves, but toward the end I found her behavior hard to comprehend. She seems to realize who the strange girl in her yard is, finally, but denies it; she also, though, helps the girl to escape just before committing a double murder and settling down to die with a long dead corpse hidden in a special room. The use of constant flashbacks ala the TV show Legends doesn't help; we go from her childhood to WWII to the Russian seizure of Estonia and the consequent events mentioned above, back and forth without any clear reason for each switch, and we switch points of view several times, from her to the girl in the yard. The final section drops narrative and consists of Soviet era documents regarding both the sister's husband and Aliinde's Communist agent husband, here referred to as a criminal. I didn't understand. I ended confused as to the author's purpose or what impression the reader was supposed to have at the end.
Recently I was caught with feelings of nostalgia. Not nostalgia in the way that you may think, light thoughts of a simpler self, but rather a pressing nostalgia evident of a different perspective. A fresh worldview that challenged the simplicity of my modern quality of living. For my life I could not remember where those feelings originated, until I came to the realization that I had obtained it years ago in the pages of a book. I'm sure many of us avid readers can relate to those lingering feelings that an excellent novel can elicit, even years in the future.
The source of my nostalgia was in a book about the Soviet occupation of Estonia. That is all I could remember at the time, but it was far more than good enough for the almighty power of Google's search algorithm. I saw the cover of the book and found myself five years in the past, wandering a bookstore somewhere in europe. I got the book because my mother, like Sofi is from Finland, which was a dumb reason in retrospect, but who needs a good reason to read a book (there are so many, and we all have so little time). Needless to say, I reordered it immediately. This book is beautiful to the point of sadness. Please take my advice and read this book. You will feel its touch years from now and you certainly will never regret it.
“Free Estonia!” These words rang out silently in the hearts of the Estonian peasants but not out loud for fear of brutal or deadly reprisals from Russian domination. Spanning over 50 years starting in the 1940’s, this shocking story packed with mesmerizing imagery began as simple storytelling but soon developed into a gripping, emotional tale told in the omniscient point of view and by the main characters.
Aliide – the lonely, jealous younger sister who was obsessed with Hans, her older sister’s husband. Zara – a terrified young girl forced into prostitution, a victim of sex trafficking. Ingel – the beautiful, “perfect” older sister who doesn’t realize her marriage and her life are in danger. Hans – a peasant revolutionist, devoted husband and father.
The backdrop is war, poverty and the struggle for survival. The conflict is family loyalty and the quest for freedom. The characters are vivid and totally believable. The prose is captivating and often alarmingly explicit. The author brings every chapter to life and weaves every aspect of the novel together bringing it to an unexpected and chilling end.

Kimi ni Todoke From Me to You Vol 1 Karuho Shiina Books

From back cover:
Sawako Kuronuma is the perfect heroine.... for a horror movie. With striking similarities to a haunting movie character - jet-black hair, sinister smile and silent demeanor - she is mistakenly called Sadako by those around her. But behind her scary facade is a very misunderstood teenager. Too shy to fit in, all she wants to do is make some friends. But when the most popular boy in class befriends her, she's sure to make more than just that - she's about to make some enemies too!

Review:
Sawako Kuronuma is beginning her first year of high school. Because of her appearance, she has the nickname "Sadako" - the name of a fictional character behind a 'cursed video'. Sawako is shy (and naive and trusting and....), but determined to make friends. She meets another first year student named Shota Kazehaya who is in her class. Kazehaya is naturally friendly and is also very popular. Based on Kazehaya's positive interactions with Sawako, other students begin to talk to her as well. Sawako has been ignored/ostracized for so long that she feels unworthy of what many would consider common politeness. Sawako credits Kazehaya with being responsible for her new friends and the improvement in the way other students view her. Sawako clearly has a case of hero worship for Kazehaya, but finds that her feelings for him are different than her feelings for other (male) classmates who are polite to her.

Kazehaya shows signs of special feelings for Sawako as well. He is happy for that she has female friends (her first) who invite her to do things with them, but.... he wonders how long he will have to wait for her attention. I found Kazehaya especially well written since he had to deal with his own interest in Sawako, but doesn't want to interfere with her budding friendships.

The book ends with Sawako being accused of spreading rumors about her new friends. Due to her shyness and lack of communication skills, the misunderstandings are likely to increase.

This series does move slowly, but I found this a very satisfying introduction to Sawako and her classmates.
I give book 1 of kimi ni todoke a 4.5

In order to come up with an overall review/rating for the series and this specific book within the series, I used the following criteria:

Character development: Excellent (5). This series is about teenagers and their relationships; primarily focused on the high school environment and activities. The characters are very real and human. I would be surprised if anyone reading this could not find someone that they can relate to. The characters grow and we learn more about them in a consistent manner. In the 20+ books that I have read of this series, I have not noted any actions that seemed out of character based on the character development and story line. Characters have changed, but they have changed in ways that are logical and consistent with what the reader knows of them.

Art: Is slightly better than average (3.5) I enjoy this series a great deal, but the art could be improved especially the faces.

Relationship development: is Excellent (5) Although this series does move slowly, this means that the relationships develop as they would in real life. The shy girl doesn't get the guy by the end of the first book, friendships don't develop (or end) abruptly and for no reason, etc.

Overall Story: Very Good (4). This is not my 'typical' genre of manga, but I did enjoy reading the books. My big complaint is that it seems to move so so slowly. It is about relationships - love, friendship, frenemies, and acquaintances. Sawaka agonizes for chapters over decisions. Since I do the same thing, I can't fault her, but at the same time, it does make the story move very slowly.

Author's notes/extras: Not every author includes includes author's notes, however, Karuho Shiina has. I enjoy learning more about the person behind a book so I appreciate the extra effort that the author takes to tell us about herself.

Will I re-read? Excellent (5). Yes, I will re-read this series. As a matter of fact, I DID. I read most of the books (the first time) on-line, but felt guilty that the author and publishing company were not benefiting. I purchased the books and have found that the print version from the publisher is the better way (for me) to enjoy these books.

Will I recommend? Very Good (4.5). If you enjoy this style of manga, I believe you will enjoy this series.

Kimi ni Todoke From Me to You Vol 1 Karuho Shiina Books Reviews

I'm kind of a huge sucker for shoujo romance stuff like this. So when it started off right, with the outsider girl, I loved it! I have a preference for girls that are misunderstood or left on the outside of social standings because everyone's afraid of her for some reason and I LOVE it when the one guy that does notice her tries to help her and realizes that she's actually not any of those horrible things that people say about her and that she can be beautiful.

Wonderful beginning and I can't wait to read more later.
Ayane is torn between her future and her boyfriend. She cares for him, but is she just taking the easy path? Can advice from her friends and a very unlikely source help her make the right choices, or will she still be afraid to look forward to the future?

This one Ayane takes the stage. Usually she is in the background, supporting and offering assistance so I am glad she has had the chance to shine in her own way. As the year slowly reaches to its end, what can we expect for our favorite group of high schoolers? I cannot wait for the next one to come soon.
My daughter read this and lost her mind. She immediately demanded Volume 2 which I did purchase for her after some negotiation. Considering she was willing to work to get the next book, it must have been great. Her goal in life is to do as little as possible so that was unexpected.
Sawako is a sweet, optimistic and generous teenage girl seriously handicapped by her resemblance to Sadako, a character from a horror movie. She has no friends because she doesn't know how to get past all the absurd paranormal things her classmates believe about her. Her lonely existence takes a turn for the better when the extremely popular boy Shota Kazehaya takes an interest in her. Kazehaya's acceptance of Sawako leads to other classmates giving her a chance to show her true kind nature.

Encouraged by two of her female classmates, Chizuru Yoshida and Ayane Yano, Sawako starts learning how to turn her scary appearance and reputation into a positive thing, first by secretly play the role of a ghost on a class outing, and then learning to tell ghost stories.

Naturally, many of the other girls in her school are angry and jealous of the time and attention Sawako gets from Kazehaya. An unnamed wavy haired girl puts in a few appearances, and I'm thinking she's going to turn out to be a significant antagonist in this story. The last two pages of vol. 1 show Yoshida and Yano hearing that Sawako is spreading ugly rumors about them. Of course to the reader, who has been privy to Sawako's thoughts and gotten to know her, this is preposterous, but it looks like vol. 2 will be concerned with further instances of Sawako trying to clear up misunderstandings about herself.

Sawako is prevented from being a pathetic, pitiable character by her endless optimism and willingness to help others. She doesn't spend time feeling sorry for herself, nor has her isolation and the often cruel treatment of her classmates made her bitter. She is unfailingly generous with her time and her understanding of their school work.

Sawako learns and grows from the difficulties she runs into. Watching as she develops her friendships (and what I'm sure will become more than a friendship where Kazehaya is concerned) is a good read. I'm looking forward to volume 2!
From back cover
Sawako Kuronuma is the perfect heroine.... for a horror movie. With striking similarities to a haunting movie character - jet-black hair, sinister smile and silent demeanor - she is mistakenly called Sadako by those around her. But behind her scary facade is a very misunderstood teenager. Too shy to fit in, all she wants to do is make some friends. But when the most popular boy in class befriends her, she's sure to make more than just that - she's about to make some enemies too!

Review

In order to come up with an overall review/rating for the series and this specific book within the series, I used the following criteria

Character development Excellent (5).

Art Is slightly better than average (3.5) I enjoy this series a great deal, but the art could be improved especially the faces.

Relationship development is Excellent (5) Although this series does move slowly, this means that the relationships develop as they would in real life. The shy girl doesn't get the guy by the end of the first book, friendships don't develop (or end) abruptly and for no reason, etc.

Overall Story Very Good (4).

Author's notes/extras Not every author includes includes author's notes, however, Karuho Shiina has.

Well, this is the first two star review I've ever given...I had begun this book after finishing a tremendous series, and making two other attempts to begin a book, only to reject them, decided to move forward with this one. The beginning intrigued me and I went with it. The main thing that struck me when I finished is, what about this tree? We never really understand what it's power is or where it comes from...it just sort of leaves you hanging. I began by enjoying the three main characters, and wanted to see where they would end up, however, the syrupy sweetness of Marc and Valeria was simply too unbelievable to me...I mean really, a horney teen boy isn't going to move forward with a MORE than willing partner, because of "god"...the almighty? He's a WIZARD!..they all are wizards, who believe in the Lord, in a really big way. It was a tad confusing to me to say the least, because it's a super huge part of this story. I admit, this is not my preferred kind of reading..so those of you who worship or feel as the characters did will obviously not be bothered by this constant, constant, reference. However, this is supposed to be a historically driven story as well...??? Not to my knowledge, seriously, not much going on with that end either. I wanted to read this and enjoy it, was dying to have something good to read and I found myself waiting for the end. That's harsh and I'm truly sorry for offending, this is not my nature as a reviewer...but it's simply the truth.

Haunted Tree The Magus Family Chronicles Book 1 eBook Scott Robert Scheller Reviews

This book was written for me! I enjoyed the characters and the total idea of it. Please continue writing as reading your book was extremely enjoyable.
Briefly Plot is good but executed ok-ish; a nice tale but heavily christian, sounded like catechism. Characters are so and so, especially the main female who felt like a romantic tool for Marc.

Now the long version. The language is good, evocative but not pompous, fluid and well-honed. Good job to the author. The action scenes are brief and reasonable, mostly, and the tension is good. The pacing could be improved, tension goes down too often for too long.

What really put me off is the Christian theme so explicit. When characters continuously say "God bless you", "God bless me", "Thank God for that", while living in a kind of apocalyptic context, that seems absolutely unrealistic to me. That's when the worst gets out of people, and they might plead forgiveness to God or Gods but with fear, resentment, desperation not with overflowing gratefulness.

Those kind of expressions are put as common sayings, yes, but are also present in the introspective bits of all main characters. It sounds to me like the author's belief system got too involved in the tale, at the expense of internal coherence.

There is also another thing that needs work character development.

Marc is too scared/afraid of magic, unreasonably so since he greatly respects the wizard Oren. Now, either he shouldn't be so afraid, or he should not respect Oren so much. There needs to be a reconciliation between these two, but I didn't see it. Yes, later this changes under Oren's tutelage, but I find the "premise" unrealistic.

Valeria is a bit stereotyped, and she kind of acts like Marc's support only. She dearly loves him, she helps him out, she quench his fears. She's a mother-wife before being even romantically involved with him. I prefer strong, well characterised women in my fiction.

To conclude, I think the author has potential and the next novels will probably be stronger. However, I doubt I'll be buying the sequel of this. Not my cup of tea.
Got this for my son, he's an avid reader. This book held his attention so much so that he didn't play video games or watch movies over a weekend. When done, he asked if author had other works. Looking forward to more stuff from this author.
I really enjoyed this book. It is so well written. I can see the characters in my mind. It kept me engaged, and I wanted to know what happened next. Would make a great movie. The book club I belong to is reading it this month. Waiting for the next book.
I feel honored to be able to be at the beginning of what is no doubt going to be an exciting ride. What Scott has provided in the Haunted Tree is a rich vibrant world of the Magus family. Rich in character development, exciting action, and a very pleasant view of "magic". Can't wait for Book 2!
It may seem I took a while to read the book. It did not. My children read it as well. This is definitely a story for ALL ages! The story has meaning, and magic is seen as a gift from God. Well explained in religious terms. Loved the characters. I could feel their emotions, and the magic....! It was like a movie in my head o(*^▽^*)o
The story is full of excitement, and you find yourself drawn into a beautiful world of fantasy. Mark and Valeria's friendship slowly developed into a beautiful romance. With the conflicts in the kingdom and new king, the novel keeps you on the edge. Well written!! Left us expecting more after last page. Both my children loved the magic mystery, the action and adventure in the book. I loved the beautiful romance that developed between main characters and the suspense and mystery of the powers held by the tree and Mark.
Definitely a book to keep in your library, and one you'd never get tired of. I had figured out how to borrow from Prime. Had to purchase it. A must read book!!

The Sky Is Falling Puffin Books Kit Pearson Books Reviews

The Sky is Falling is a wonderful children's book by Canadian authouress Kit Pearson. It is the heart wrenching story of ten year old Norah and her brother Gavin, who flee England in the midst of the second World War. Gavin is too young to understand what is happening to him, but Norah knows perfectly well what is happening to her, her parents are shipping her off to some place called Canada, to live with people that she doesn't know in a place she has never visited. My reccomendation is to read it and buy it.
Set in WWII era England and Canada, the sky is falling is a poignant coming of age story during one of the toughest times in history. The story is told through the eyes of Norah, a ten year old English girl who is growing up in her war pocked country. To her great dismay she and her younger brother are sent away to Canada to live with some elderly sister in order to keep them safe from the bombs that are dropping in England everyday. Her parents only want to keep her safe but Norah feels betrayed by her parents for sending her away, and feels extremly lonely in this new country where no matter how hard she tried could not manage to fit in. The book follows Norah through her struggle to be accepted in Canada and to come to terms with her own feelings about being sent away from her native country and the idea tha one can find home wherever they go. The Sky is Falling combines a wonderful coming of age story that would be interesting for any young adault, and a really vivd picture of what life was like for the people of Canada and England during WWII. This is a must for anyone who wants a great story and a little bit of history.
Have you ever wondered how to explain about the War, and the happenings to your children? Well Kit Pearson, Vancouver BC Author explains it in a clear and precise manner through her book, the Sky is Falling.
The World War 2 has several of children, including Norah and Gavin, and then all of their friends going to Canada, and other ares that will allow for them to remain safe during the War time, Norah; however, was wanting to stay in Conventry along with her Uncle, and Aunt, but her mother said no, you will go with the other children, and stay safe with them, and then you can come back when it is over.
If you want to find out more about Gavin and Norah's Adventure, please read the book, and you will find out more. I don't want to say anymore, because I don't want to ruin the book for everyone!
The Sky is Falling by Kit Pearson is a very good book. The main character is ten-year-old Norah Stoakes, who lives in England in 1940, during World War Two. She loves living in England, and she and her friends have a secret club called the Skywatchers, who watch the sky for enemy planes. But then Mr. and Mrs. Stoakes decide that it would be best to send Norah and her five-year-old brother, Gavin, to live in Canada until the war is over. Norah is upset, but she is sent to Canada anyway. She and Gavin get sent to live with the Ogilvies, a rich mother and daughter that live in Toronto. The children are told to call them Aunt Mary and Aunt Florence. They prefer Gavin, because all they wanted was a boy. Norah hates it in Canada. She has no friends, because in school she is considered a coward. She is miserable. Will Norah ever grow to like Canada? Will she and Gavin ever see England again? This book was interesting, and the ending was surprising. It taught me about what it was like to be an English evacuee in Canada during World War Two.
Often we forget how war impacts children. It doesn't need to be a battle or the vivid views of death and destruction. Just daily life when a nation is at war.

In modern times we've 'rescued' children from war torn areas to the safer parts of the world either for a summer or a school year. Thin Northern Irish children coming to Central New York for a summer, or Israeli children visiting family in the States.

In the 1940s, brother and sister Norah (7), and Gavin (G. almost a baby at age 5), leave their parents to stay in Canada, "for up to a year." Except no one knows how long the war will be, and how harsh it will be on the English cities and countryside. Up to a year at the start of their voyage becomes...well, longer. Three books long.

Away from the war, Norah and Gavin enjoy a peaceful lifestyle, enjoying much that is rationed in Europe (especially foods, and utilities like light and fuel). Life is good by all accounts. Except children will always miss their families... even when 'life is good' by anyone's standards. In this case, even without war, would N. & G. have enjoyed what they come to accept as daily urban Toronto life were they to have remained on the farm in England?

Pearson gets 'close' to the children in the story, just as children reading Norah's adventures will get close to her. She grows as a person throughout the books, and it is easily seen that the selfish child who leaves England in 1942 is not the mature person who we read about in the final book of the trilogy. The reader grows with both children, through their experiences. Norah who 'remembers,' home, and Gavin who begins to think of Canada as home...as he matures the time in Canada is more relevant than the baby years in the England. Norah keeps her accent, Gavin sounds more like Aunt Florence and Aunt Mary than his parents.

I would recommend this trilogy to any child who is s student of history, or has been separated from their own family for any length of time, or adults who wish to share a rich memorable story with their grands/or children.

And teachers/educators, listen up, a great way to get discussions going! SO MUCH to compare to our contemporary world safe from wars in other parts of the globe. Even today...rationing of food/lights/heat/clothing. How does this compare with the world of the citizens of your classrooms!!

I hope Pearson's books never go out of print. There is a reason that this book won a major Canadian award for writing!!!
My son choose this book for a nonfiction book report assignment for school. He wasn't very excited about the assignment, but after starting this book he really enjoyed it. He has said how good the book was and that he was glad he had to read it.
It was perfect

Harsh Reality Blues A Survivor Guide to the Real World Rebecca M Stokes 9780965526449 Books

Stokes, Rebecca. The Harsh Reality Blues. Flagstaff: West Fork Publishing, 1997.

The Harsh Reality Blues is a self-development book directed to high school teens. Rebecca Stokes, who during high school got pregnant at 17 years of age and did not know anything about the "real world," writes this book. Stokes shares her experiences and how hard the real world was for her. In the book she discusses money, legal and physical issues you may run into, and ways to help you get through this troubling time. For instance, while referring to the "Melancholy Blues," she provides help by suggesting the person replace negative thought with positive ones and to go out and do things. In the book, she also shows you employment information such as how to find a job, filling out applications, how to keep your job, and if you want, how to leave a job. With money, she shows such things as the cost of living on your own and how to budget your life.

The Harsh Reality Blues is a great book for teens to read. It gives you a glimpse of the real world. It makes you think about things you, most of the time, have not like dealing with stress and depression. She also gives great suggestions on how to deal with adult issues. I recommend this book to all teens. In the book, Stokes does a very good job explaining things in a way that teens can understand and relate to. Stokes also connects to the reader by telling about things that have happened to her personally. You know that a person who has had these experiences throughout the book wrote it, not just someone who thinks they know what others should do. Although I liked the book a lot, I felt that her section on budgeting was unrealistic because she only speaks of budgeting in certain specific locations, however each person's lifestyle, job circumstances, etc., need to be considered. Take Durango, for example; in the book she says that rent would cost about 500 dollars, but we all know in Durango this is NOT TRUE. In Durango, living circumstances are different because pay is low and cost of living is high. I think she should have taken that into consideration. Overall, I liked this book. It gave me a realistic view of what to expect after high school.

Harsh Reality Blues A Survivor Guide to the Real World Rebecca M Stokes 9780965526449 Books Reviews

"The Harsh Reality Blues" provides young adults with an excellently documented and thoroughly readable resource. It deals with the topics we so often assume kids will learn about in school, but so rarely do.
This book describes, in detail, life on your own. It talks about the various obstacles one will face when becoming independent, and some good ways to deal with them. Miller Stokes covers food, money, clothing, college expenses, health, nutrition and the pros and cons of owning an automobile. She describes how she faced her problems, but also how one should plan ahead so that they don't run into as many of these problems.
This book is well written in a format that makes it easy for teenagers to understand the content and the language. She uses examples from her life to show that she has been through these obstacles, and uses advice to help others avoid these obstacles. This book is a boost of confidence because it opens your mind up to so many new ideas, and realistic methods of living. Many will enjoy this book just because it gives them a heads up about what is out there and waiting for them.
There are so many things in this book that made me think:”Please tell me I did not just read this” that I finally gave up and DNF at 78%
Looking back, I should have stopped when:
• It was disclosed that “feminine release” strengthens internal muscles, which increases the chances of getting pregnant, so the more “releases” she gets, the better chances the “seed” have.
• Repetitions - the words “brave” and “bravery” was repeated 14 times in 3 pages of the text, 4 times in a 7-line paragraph alone.
• When I waddled through pages and pages of yawn-inducing conversations which led nowhere only to be repeated in slightly different manner between different participants.
• He started “grinding his rod against her femininity”
• Sex scenes that reminded me of the furniture- assembly instructions – substitute “rods” for divots and “femininity” for brackets and you’ve got it.
• It was revealed that bullets don’t work well on piercing dragon’s tough hide but arrows shut from a longbow will do the trick.
• A 3-day mission to rescue a hostage required a Royal tent (and that it is a Royal tent was itinerated at every opportunity). The above-mentioned tent featured electric lights from a portable generator, indoor plumbing, huge four-posture bed with thick mattress plus two other beds, tapestries for the walls, gilded fireplace (what, no grand piano? This is really roughing it up!)
• After deciding that she is not brave (here is that word again) enough therefore unworthy to birth royal babies, our heroine withdraws “physical intimacy” from dragon princes. So they decide to test her resolve by torturing her in a form of cooking dinner while tempting her with a bit of striptease. (They we right – there were the most torturous chapters I have read in a long time)

What finally made me stop? A vegetable. You see, in Kira’s own words:
“I never had a zucchini pointed at me before and I couldn’t help but realize that it was just about the same thickness and length as Blake and Steven’s rods when fully erect”
I rest my case.
I honestly am not sure how it has a 3.8 rating. It was just... boring. That is the best word I can think of. It sounded like it had so much promise but it didn't deliver at all. I finally finished it desperately hoping it would improve, but it never did. What is wrong with it? Let me tell you a few of the biggest issues. First there is literally no character or plot development. You are thrown into a scene and just when you think you are about to get an explanation, it changes with no warning or transition. Secondly the supposed sex scenes and romance terrible. I can't really call them sex or romance scenes because that would require the author to have a conversation more than 2 lines long, or to actually finish a scene before moving on to the next one. Once again no plot or character or scene development is an issue here. Also the language the author uses to describe what people are doing kind of sounds like a child. Third There is literally nothing likeable about the female lead. She is your typical very weak, ridiculous female "heroine" that needs saving. She constantly gets in the men's way, and needs their rescue because as a women she unable to do anything. After being sold into slavery she finds out a bout dragons, and has no reaction. Then she sees the brothers and suddenly she's fine with selling her self as sex slave and letting them decide who is sleeping with her and when. Suddenly all she can think about is getting pregnant and having babies. Then about halfway through she develops this obsession with proving she is "brave" enough to bear the royal heir because she hadn't yet proved her self "brave" enough to be a mother. She repeats this thought and the word brave at every opportunity until the end of the book. In conclusion it's poorly written and not worth the time.
Even though the parts of the story were completely unbelievable it's fiction so I rolled with it. I completely lost interest when Kira froze and fainted instead of seeking help for her and her friend when they were being attacked. It got worse from there one Kira went on this I have to prove I'm not a coward crusade. I skipped pages and pages and chapters it was so awful. Then the stupid girl almost kills one of the brothers shooting arrows again for her I'm not a coward crusade. Then she gets her self snatched by Cain the leader of the destroyers because she can't shoot her stupid arrows from the window so she decides to go outside. Ughhhhhhh. I skipped to the end to get it over with.

The Confession of Fitzwilliam Darcy Mary Street 9780425219904 Books

I bought this book on January 15, 2008 and just finished reading it for, at least, the third time. In owning over 100 JAFF in paperback and on kindle, it is very difficult to remember what each is about. Some do stand out. With this one I remember finding it began and ended with amusing lines. First, Darcy is fuming that Elizabeth "contrived to bring herself so much to my notice throughout the course of that evening." And, last, he is admonished to remember "You cannot expect to excel if you do not practise a great deal." by Elizabeth when he bungles their first kiss.

I own at least three other Darcy POV variations on P&P: Pamela Aiden's Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman, Regina Jeffers' Darcy's Passions and Stanley Hurd's Darcy's Tale in 3 Volumes. I have to say Mr. Hurd's is so far my favorite but Volume III of his trilogy is not yet out. And to be fair, he is writing 6 years after this author so he has her and the others' work(s) and the reviews of such to learn from and expand upon.

I found this book to be very enjoyable. First, my copy only had 2 errors. It was also complete vs. copies which had duplicated chapters. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I found that, I wanted to keep reading to see what happened next. Mary Street does follow canon. Ironically, I read reviews that "hammer" authors for using JA's words while other authors, such as in these reviews, are told that the book is boring because of the use of JA's words. JA's words helped to ground me in the story. It may not have been Regency language every time but I found it very interesting.

I did not like the way it ended...the bungled kiss was so UNromantic, even though funny. I would have liked to have read more sexual tension, not necessarily sex, but that angst when the chemistry is astir. I did like reading step-by-step of how his totally negative opinion (sturdy figure, indeed!) changes. And it not a sudden thing but more "I was in the middle of it before I realized" or to that effect. I especially liked the various scenes in which he overhears/eavesdrops and learns more about her wit and about her kindness, in certain situations. There are no surprises with this story. Rather just someone wanting us to look at it from Darcy's viewpoint. More could have been done with it but this is enjoyable, especially when you consider how many years ago it was written and how this JAFF genre has evolved.

The Confession of Fitzwilliam Darcy Mary Street 9780425219904 Books Reviews

Enjoyed this book. It followed Austen's Pride and Prejudice, but much was added during his realization why Elizabeth refused his offer of marriage at Hunsford. Soul searching more in depth with Darcy realizing just how badly he's acted in the past with Elizabeth. His Aunt Catherine's tirade after confronting Elizabeth again gave him the push that he needed to go back to Meryton. Same misunderstandings throughout this story, but I think Fitzwilliam's soul searching after his refusal was excellently written. In this version the first kiss was awkward because their lips missed, but the second was powerful. Elizabeth reminds him that they'll never be proficient unless they practice! Well, Lady Catherine's lesson was finally taken to heart. She'd be proud!
At the heart of this variation is the change in Point of View from that of Pride and Prejudice. POV in this novel is exclusively that of Darcy. The reader knows nothing but what Darcy could have known. That said the plot is very close to the original and there are numerous quotes from P&P. One disappointment in this regard is Elizabeth's reaction to the second proposal. While it would be hard to improve on the way Jane Austen describes this event, the author of this novel does a mediocre job in my opinion. The novel itself is generally well written and the editing is very satisfactory. The other down side aside from the second proposal is that I found the novel a bit boring from time to time, especially when the plot is identical to P&P. Where's the "variation" in that? I obviously much prefer the original in entirety and some of the author's selections make me think the author is too hung up in the change of POV. This is really only a variation as the result in change of POV. Austen's great use of her own unique form of 3rd party POV is missed. My disappointment in the second proposal is a serious objection, along with the occasional boring parts so I rate this novel only three stars.
This one was a sleeper for me; I had seen the title but it never called to me. When will I learn that you can't judge a book by it's cover You are privy to the internal and external conversations and feelings that carry Mr D from the assembly at Meryton to the vastly improved Mr D at the conclusion of P&P. After first sighting Lizzy he begins to think she is using her wiles to catch him-my goodness, he sounded positively narcissistic! However, as time goes by, you realize that he is a man who feels overwhelmed with duty duty as a Darcy, duty at Pemberley, duty as a caretaker for Georgiana. He has a very definite fear of failure! I began to understand why he was so standoffish and obsessed with himself. As we know the proposal at Hunsford went badly and we follow his gradual transformation to a man who can show his goodness, a brother who loves his sister, a good friend to Charles, and the man of Elizabeth's dreams. This is very well written, the language is a reasonable approximation of the original style, and it is a joy to read!
This was recommended to me by a friend/colleague at an elementary school I often work at. I read it first and absolutely fell in love with it. It's a powerful and poignant story about two kids around the turn of the (last) century who are breaking racial barriers by getting to know each other and become friends: a white boy and a black girl in the south. I loved this story so much, I bought this copy for my mom and asked her to send it to another friend of mine when she was done. It's a fantastic and touching story, not predictable, and truly well written with wit and humor and sadness and magnificent joy.
Not bad at all
Wonderful book. I would compare it to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. The story line and issues are similar and has a remarkable effect on young readers, who may think Ms. Lee's book too mature. The characters is The Best Bad Luck are written with depth and meaning. I met Kristin once and she is a lovely lady and I look forward to more of her books.
1917. A "negra" girl. A white boy. Friendship is the highest form of love. But just maybe for Emma and Dit, there is something more.
The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had is southern historical novel featuring characters the author unearthed in her own family history. It's impossible to know how much was truth and how much was fiction, because each and every character in this moving tweenage drama was well-developed and believable. The law man ironically serves as villain in chief of the tale, and though he was easy to dislike, he was also complex Levine didn't simplify him but instead let readers see the internal turmoil he felt. It's refreshing to read a book for young readers that explores challenging issues without dumbing them down or getting preachy. The unlikely but life-changing friendship between Dit and Emma is truly an inspiration, as is the subtly unfolding story of Dit's relationship with his father. Highly recommend this book.
I purchased this for my 12 year old, as she loved the other book by this author. She loved this one as well. We were very lucky in that the author visited the middle school and my daughter was able to get her books signed! Hope the author continues to write more great books.
I read this book to my 5th grade class after reading another book, by Kristin Levine, The Lions of Little Rock. This is another excellent period piece dealing with racial tension and and the conflicted friendship between a black girl and a white boy. This book is well written and as with her other book written by the perspective of the white child.
Just one question—do Southerners have a fall crop of peas that would need shelling at Thanksgiving? We Northerners are done with that in late June.

The Maze Runner Maze Runner Book One James Dashner Books

I got this book shortly after having watched the first film. The movie really drew me in and I had to have it. Now, altogether, I think I like the film much better than the book, but the novel has its merits too without a doubt.

I see a lot of reviews talking about how the characters were without personality, boring, unreadable, flat. In some ways I do understand the frustration. At times it's near impossible to read what is going on exactly, BUT I think I've found purpose to what so many deem madness. I mean, these are kids who woke up in a strange place with no memory of who they are, where they came from. To top it all off, they're trapped in a maze crawling with monsters at night. And no matter how much they try to escape, they can't. They have lived in a place with no idea of what they were, who they were supposed to be, or what they ARE supposed to be now. For me, it would only make sense for a stagnant environment to produce stagnation in the people occupying it. I know that may be reaching a little bit - but it's what has helped me to manage through the book with a peaked interest.

I couldn't put the novel down. Overall, I find the concept of the story good. And despite the blank slates of many characters, they are still fairly likable (except for Alby. Book Alby worked my absolute last nerve. He was a complete 360 from his movie self and I have never hated a character so much so quickly. I disliked him more than Gally >:( ). All in all, the movie made me want to dive directly into The Scorch Trials, so it definitely did something right. Honestly, I think the biggest issue that most people can agree with is the lack of personality in the characters. But in my perspective, I can kind of make it work in my head! I look forward to continuing these books.

The Maze Runner Maze Runner Book One James Dashner Books Reviews

This is a horror book filled with nastiness, lack of empathy, and most revoltingly, the idea that it's reasonable and morally correct to torture and kill children in the name of possibly saving the human race. I forced myself to finish it to see if the ending had any redeeming qualities---it does not. A "teaser" for the second book begins with a brother and sister kidnapped after watching the murder of their parents. Apparently many adults, including respected reviewers, can maintain enough emotional distance to enjoy this sort of thing, but I am not one of them. And I certainly do not regard this as appropriate for children, or even teenagers.
The Maze Runner? (Rolls eyes so hard she can see her brain) Meh, it was forgettable...and aggravating! In fact, I can distinctly remember the day-to-day struggle I had with the book! Days where I would dread the fact that I had to pick up The Maze Runner and suffer reading through the endless chapters that give you no answers, no purpose to The Maze, no clear objective, annoying and pointless characters that you feel no connection to, and hopelessness.

Hmm, okay, have you ever played Monkey in the Middle? Well, imagine you are the monkey in the middle, you have Thomas (the lead character) on one end, and James Dashner (the author) on the other end. Okay, now imagine James Dashner holding a mysterious black velvet drawstring which holds all the answers you are dying to get your hands on. Okay, now picture Thomas and Dashner cackling as they toss the drawstring back and forth over your head. At first, you chuckle and say something like, "Oh, come on guys," then 30 chapters later, while they continue to play their silly game, you give up on the attempt to intercept the drawstring, and crossing your arms you say something like, "Okay, this is getting really annoying."

Finally, after 60 chapters, you decide to walk up to Dashner and rashly kick him right on the chin and you shout, "ENOUGH!" And in your disgraceful moment of defeat and frustration, Dashner "thoughtfully" hands over the black velvet drawstring, so as to say, "All right, I'm sorry." You gasp, and then squeal, AT LAST! YOU HAVE THE ANSWERS! You fall to your knees and madly begin to open up the black velvet drawstring, "This is it! This is it!" you exclaim to yourself, only to uncover....complete and utter darkness; yep, nothing. The bag was empty the entire time.

Then, as your gaze moves steadily up at Dashner, you take notice that he is frowning, and smiling, and laughing all while staring at Thomas, who is responding in the same manner. And then it hits you, they are able to converse telepathically! What in the world!? Argh!

So you get up, take a deep breath, sweep whatever Dashner dust-bunnies have settled onto your jeans and shoulders, and begin to walk away from their wicked scheme; who needs those guys anyway? Rude! But just as you are storming off, Dashner runs up to you, laughing irritatingly while trying to catch his breath and says, "Okay, okay," his arms up in surrender, "I'm done, here take this, you'll want to read this," and just like that, he walks over to Thomas (who is laughing hysterically by the way), they pat themselves on the back, as to congratulate each other, and they walk away.

You shake your head in utter confusion and look down at the single sheet of paper resting on the palm of your hand, you unfold it, it's an epilogue. The best darn thing Dashner wrote in the entire book!
Most sets only have the 1st 3 books, it's nice this set has all 4 books. However this is NOT a Boxed set . This is a set of 4 books that are shrink wrapped together with a paper wrapper around the ends & back. It is not in a box, so the books are loose when the wrap is removed.

I disliked him more than Gally >( ). All in all, the movie made me want to dive directly into The Scorch Trials, so it definitely did something right. Honestly, I think the biggest issue that most people can agree with is the lack of personality in the characters. But in my perspective, I can kind of make it work in my head! I look forward to continuing these books.
I love stories about mates, the couple that is meant to be and will love each other until the end of time no matter what. A love that deep and true is magical and special and I am a sucker for that type of thing. One thing that was very prevalent in the Significance series was the love that Maggie and Caleb have for each other. It was such a cute relationship but they had their problems and they faced everything together. Not just them but all the couples in the series.

Not only was this series about romance but their was a lot of action and human problems as well. Independence is the fourth and final book in the Caleb and Maggie story and it did not disappoint. All throughout the series everything has been coming to a point and this is it. The Watsons aren't finished yet, they were punished because of their bad morals but they haven't learned their lesson and come back for revenge and just like before there are going to be problems, fights and plotting. All the while Maggie's old human life and her Ace life are about to crash. People from Maggie's past come to make things more difficult than they already were and the Aces need their Visionary because they still need guidance to do things a different way.

Independence really was a perfect ending to the story. I only had a couple of complaints, one was that one character started to pick up traits of another character and I didn't like that and I wish the final book would have been longer, however it did end great so I guess I can't complain. I was so invested in this series and the story that I would not have just settled for anything.

I will miss Caleb and Maggie so much and I am not lying when I say that I am getting teary-eyed just writing this review. I love the characters so much and I would have love to have more books that followed Maggie and Caleb. But I don't think I will be to broken-hearted because the Significance series continues with another group of people who my favorite characters know, I can't wait to read Undeniably Chosen and it's gonna be good.

Independence A Significance Series Novel The Significance Series Volume 4 Shelly Crane 9781480207219 Books Reviews

I loved how this series was about two people finding each other and finding out who they are and what their destiny is within the world they live in. Independence was a perfect finale to Maggie and Caleb's journey.

One thing I loved about this book was having Caleb's POV! I admit it was jarring at first, but once I got used to his voice I loved seeing this world through his perspective. Caleb is a natural leader and he stepped up and took his place as leader of his family and his people.

Maggie and Caleb are home from reunification and planning their wedding, but an old enemy is not willing to let them live in peace. Marcus has on thing on his mind and that is revenge. He will stop at nothing at destroying Maggie by hurting the people she loves most in this world.

Maggie and Caleb are forced to take matters into their own hands as they fight to find a way to stop a mad man hell bent on destroying everything. Maggie and Caleb will learn that a sacrifice will need to be made and life must be taken in order to change destiny.
First off, I really enjoy Shelly Crane's books for a couple of reasons; she does not write detailed sex, her characters are fully fleshed out, the relationships between her characters are real and enjoyable, and she creates real problems not fake I'm hiding secrets from you problems. That being said, this is my favorite series by Shelly, although her Stealing Grace duo takes a close second.
**Contains Spoilers**
This book is the conclusion of Maggie and Caleb's story. As we have enjoyed the series, we have brought in Bish, Jen, Kyle, Lynne, and Fiona. I loved all of these characters. I will admit that while I loved the first person POV in the first 3 books in this one I wished that I could have walked with the other significants for a little while also. This book encompasses the wedding, starting college, defeating Marcus, and Maggie trying to figure out how to balance the human world with the Ace one. I thought it was very well done, but a little anti-climactic. For those that love Maggie and Caleb, it was so wonderful to get to enjoy their happy ending for a little while with them. I have to add that I thought Maggie was right to forgive Beck for being horrible but I think it was time to end that friendship; a true friend doesn't walk away being totally self-centered and then apologize and start doing the same thing all over again / ugh!
The book needed a little more editing, so if the occasional missed word, wrong word, etc bothers you, you might want to pass on this one.
I thought the book was beautiful and wonderful and I am so sad to see the Jacobsons go. I would love to see more books set in the Ace world *wink, wink* Ms. Crane )

Overall If you love a good romance without detailed sex, please please start this series and enjoy Shelly Crane's other books. This series will make you smile, laugh, cry, and rant. Ultimately, it will give you that warm fuzzy feeling that all good romances do and it will leave you smiling at the end of the day. Why didn't I give it 5 stars? The book needed more editing. Other than that, I loved it! Would I buy it again? Absolutely! Will I be reading more by this author? Most Definitely! Enjoy )
Five stars does not do this book justice. It is a singularly beautiful story and one of the world's most important works of philosophy and spirituality. But more than that, in this edition the author manages to achieve the nearly impossible; Patton translates the original poem into English verse that is remarkable fluid, readable, and graceful.

If you have any curiosity about the world or any interest in the fundamental nature of humanity, read this.

The Bhagavad Gita Penguin Classics Anonymous Juan Mascaro Simon Brodbeck 8601404417108 Books Reviews

The Bhagavad Gita is the world's most translated scripture. The task for a Gita translator is to effectively take the poetic multilayer Sanskrit original and translate it into English preserving it's flavor allowing it to stand alone without commentary. Few have succeeded. I have read multiple editions of the Gita and,in my Sanskrit studies, read the original in Sanskrit.

While I haven't read all the English translations, Mascaro's translation is the best I have read. It takes the reader to the heart of the Gita, to their own heart and to that of Lord Krishna with practical real instructions on how we should live to be aligned with God. It is a practical nitty gritty instruction manual on how we are to construct and conduct ourselves in our own "life battle".

Gandhi read the Gita as his daily practice; it sustained him. I have found the same experience when I have picked up this volume during my own times of crisis.

If one wants to plumb the depths of the Gita, then I would suggest getting Winthrop Sargent's Bhagavad Gita with the Sanskrit and Sanskrit translation. It is excellent, but a few of the translations are off, and it is dry compared to Mascaro.

There are many commentaries and at present I don't have a favorite one to recommend.

If one wants to explore both the flavor and the depth of the Gita, I would recommend undertaking Sanskrit studies with Vyaas Houston [...] . He gives weekend trainings to begin to learn Sanskrit as well as immersions into the Gita.

I can assure you, you won't be disappointed.

If you don't have the time or money, Mascaro's translation is a gold mine.
At first I was surprised at the frequent words, notes written in the paperback sent to me.
But I'm taking a class and I love seeing someone else's thoughts. Now it has even more
notes in it, but I'm keeping this book and its comments. ) Lovely words from Krishna.
Juan Mascaro's translation remains simply the best.

The English is clear, the words are considered, and the balance of the sentences is simply marvellous.

It reminds one of the simple, balanced writing of the King James Bible. My feeling is that the way Mascaro writes English is strongly influenced by his Catalan heritage, yet the exactitude of his prose reflects his long association with Cambridge.

In my opinion, comparing several other translations, Mascaro's translation delivers what is most important-- the spirit of the message in simple, clear english.

Jacques Joubert
A fantastic dialogue between a warrior prince (Arjuna) and God incarnate (Kishna) about fighting the good fight; right action, refusal of selfishness from motive by performing duties to our true Self, not ourselves.
One of the great books of Vedanta philosophy, Mahatma Gandhi referred to is as "the book par excellence for the seeker of Truth" in his autobiography.
This translation by Sir Edwin Arnold from the Sanskrit into traditional English-type prose is considered by many to be the best translation available, and I agree. I have read numerous translations, and none have the beauty, fullness, and informative extolling of virtue for living expressed more artistically.
I own two copies of the Bhagavad Gita. I enjoy this one more. I enjoy it more because of the intoduction which is basically college lecture or essay. You do not have to read the introduction to enjoy this book (as I enjoy my other copy which has no introduction) but, it adds to the reading of it by adding context and a clearer explanation of this translation.
To me this seems like a great translation of a book that's regarded by many to be holy scripture. Arjuna's inner conflict most definitely can be related to a given person's conscience trying to do what is right in what appears to be a paradoxical existence. Krishna's divine point of view sheds light on and puts this in perspective. This one is worth reading again and again.
This is the only translation of The Bhagavad Gita that I've read, so as a translation I have nothing to compare it to. I can say that it was an easy read, and I was able to finish it in one sitting. As a work of literature, the translation was smooth and poetic, and I really enjoyed reading it. I really couldn't put it down. As a religious/spiritual work, I found it to be very enlightening, and it touched on many aspects of one's spiritual and daily life. I'm glad that I read it, and I think that any spiritual person regardless of their religion will find it useful. I only took one star away, because of my own ignorance. Since, this is the only translation that I've read, I don't know if there is a better version out there.

- GB
Five stars does not do this book justice. It is a singularly beautiful story and one of the world's most important works of philosophy and spirituality. But more than that, in this edition the author manages to achieve the nearly impossible; Patton translates the original poem into English verse that is remarkable fluid, readable, and graceful.

If you have any curiosity about the world or any interest in the fundamental nature of humanity, read this.
Selina Kyle and her younger sister Maggie live in the slums of Gotham City. Their mother has been a mostly absent part of their lives, and the few times she is around she is usually drunk or on drugs and often with a new lowlife boyfriend who is supplying those drugs. Maggie suffers from cystic fibrosis, an incurable genetic disorder that is slowly killing her. As a member of the street gang known as the Leopards, Selina fights in underground fighting rings to earn the money needed to pay for medical tests, medications, food, and rent money to keep them both going. At least, it does until the night their mother is arrested and a woman from social services arrives with two police officers to take the girls into custody and place them in foster care.

The foster homes are usually overcrowded group homes, infested with bugs, and won’t be able to provide Maggie with the care she needs to try and survive having cystic fibrosis. The care she needs is expensive and unlikely to be provided even if she were lucky enough to wind up in one of the better foster homes. The girls both know that this is essentially a death sentence for Maggie, but what can they do to escape it?

When Selina is arrested for assaulting the police officers who came to take them away, she learns that at nearly 18 and with two previous strikes against her, she won’t be going to a juvenile detention center. She’ll be sent to prison instead. When a woman offers her an alternative, one that will see Maggie placed in better care and will erase Selina’s criminal record, she realizes that she really has no other option. For her sister’s sake, and understanding that she likely won’t see Maggie ever again, Selina accepts Talia al Ghul’s offer.

I have long been a fan of the DC comics Catwoman character and have seen numerous origin stories describing how she started out and how she became one of the more recognized of Batman’s foes. Those seeking a book that follows the traditional DC comic book origin story for her probably won’t appreciate this one. While all the expected characters appear in the book, Catwoman’s origin story as told here is rather different than what one would expect, and it is certainly different than what is told in the various comic book versions.

Personally, I loved it. This book kept me so entranced that if there were any typos, I never noticed them. (Any book that can keep me that interested in just reading & not watching for errors is a rare thing these days.) Parts of this story even had me tearing up and wanting to cry. I am very glad that I picked it up. I will definitely be reading the other books that are out about the DC comic book characters and hoping they are just as amazing as this one. I strongly recommend reading it.
Teenager Selina Kyle grows up in the slums of Gotham City, fighting in the underground arena. It is the only way she can get money to keep a roof over her head and to care for her ailing sister, Maggie. But all that changes when Social Services steps in. In exchange for Maggie going to a decent and loving couple’s home, Selina joins the League of Assassins and heads off to train for two years.

Selina returns as Holly Vanderhees. A rich socialite who cares only for shopping and having a good time. At least, that is what she allows people to believe. In truth, Selina if forging a friendship with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. With Batman away on a mission, Gotham is ripe for picking and the trio of ladies make a formidable team. At night, Catwoman tangles with Batwing. By day, Selina/Holly dallies with Luke Fox, her handsome neighbor.

Catwoman must pull off her biggest heist before the League of Assassins finally catch up to her. Time is running out.

***** FIVE STARS! This story starts out by showing Selina’s horrible, young teen life and explains why it is so much harder than any other person’s. The story continues two years later when she returns to Gotham City with a plan. That plan is kept under wraps by the author until well in the book, and I refuse to tell or give spoilers. When the plan is finally revealed, readers realize that everything Catwoman has done had a specific purpose. In the exciting conclusion, it all comes together and I am left grinning like an idiot. *****

Reviewed by Detra Fitch of Huntress Reviews.
This was such a fun ride and I did not expect it to pack the punch it did. I am a big Sarah J. Maas fan and I was so looking forward to Catwoman to see a different side of her writing and I was not disappointed. She delivered an action packed anti-heroine story with a ton of heart and some romance to boot.

I absolutely LOVED Selina. She is so fierce and strong and smart and tough and she also has so much heart. At the base of it all her heart is what drives her. She is so easy to root for, even as she is robbing people left and right and causing general chaos. She is simply likable and at her core she’s a good person who just does bad things sometimes.

And then we had Ivy, who in a lot of ways stole the show. I truly loved her and loved the friendship that formed between Ivy and Selina. Forever a fan of strong and positive female friendships. Loved Harley too, she’s such a loose cannon and brought so much fun and crazy to the story. And of course I have to mention Luke, aka Batwing. Adored him as well. He is such a good guy and just wants to do right and do something meaningful. And of course I loved Selina and Luke together. It was fun watching them dance around one another and seeing how both sides of their personalities intertwined.

I feel like I need to mention though that I am not a comic book reader, it’s just not a medium I ever got into. But I love superheroes and villains as characters and I adore the genre when it comes to movies and other mediums. I mention this because if you are looking for a strict canon Catwoman, this probably isn’t the book for you. This is a new take on Catwoman, and I personally love her, but I recognize that those who are very attached to their version of Catwoman may not love this version. Personally I think the world has enough room for multiple versions and takes on classic characters, but I also get why some people don’t like to see their favorites messed with.

Catwoman Soulstealer was an action packed fun read from beginning to end. It had a great cast of characters and packed a real emotional punch. I just seriously loved this one.

Spook Destiny Joseph Delaney 9780370331805 Books Reviews

I could not stop reading! This is a thrilling book full of adventure. I could feel my heart pounding as I read it. This is the eight book in the amazing Wardstone Chronicals. In this book, Tom Ward with the help of Grimalkin the witch assasain and John Gregory attempet to bind the Devil. They suceed bt only to end up beng chased by creatures of the dark.
Wardstone Chronicles Book 8
*The Spook's Destiny*
This book just broke my record! I have to say this, I just finished this book in less than 8 hours. It was so very addicting, fueled by the ambition to reach the conclusion of the Wardstone Chronicles. I feel it coming, the end. There are strong signs that this unbelievable series is coming to an end after a couple of book. I just like the chapter titles and the illustrations. They are absolutely stunning As soon as I finished the Spook's Nightmare, I immediately started with this which got me more than surprised. First of all I would like to inform you that this novel takes you to new locations with new enemies, new skills, new people and a completely new storyline that you wouldn't have imagined for Tom and his Master, the Spook. I would like to dissect the plot into four arcs-
1) Arrival at Ireland covers 20%
2) The making and breaking of the Killorglin Ritual covers 40%
3) Binding the Fiend+ Encounter with Morrigan covers 30 %
4) Alice's Return covers 10%
I will not go deep in plot but just tell you that the antagonists are Morrigan and the Celtic witch, the goat mages who worship Pan and the Fiend itself, Tom and the Spook make alliances with local forces and the witch assassin Grimalkin and defeat all those who stand in the way of light. A lot of things happen in the book, one thing at one time obviously, that's Delaney's speciality. This time it's Tom having the worst nightmares as Morrigan, the Goddess of death haunts him in his dream and keeps chasing him in her deathly crow form. It is related to a back story when Tom and Arkwright hunted a Celtic witch and she cursed Tom that Morrigan would hunt him down if he ever came to Ireland and just that's happening so things are turning bad for Tom. I love Tom's Point of View writing throughout the book. Coming to Ireland, it has got a lot of history and the people there seem almost real, with legendary heroes and burial grounds and the 'Otherworld' which plays a major role in the book. Though however great sometime is , they cannot escape the clutches of the Dark, so Ireland is haunted by Dark Mages and Jibber, a new creature but a relatable one for the Spook. I like the introduction and how things go easily and suddenly change after the arrival of a local alliance of the landowners. The siege of the castle and the ritual covers most of the plot, but much of the light is given to Morrigan and Binding of the Fiend. They are the major focus of the book but are brought into the light much later. The new and formidable characters like the leader of the Goat Mages, their abilities, and especially their dark ritual to summon the Nature God Pan for their evil purposes is just great. The ritual seems almost realistic and full of gore and violence with a lot of blood. The appearance of the mages are prominent. But the best thing about the book is it's story. It just twists and turns and gives you fright, excitement and thrill and you feel as if its real and happening in front of you, It has a personified touch which makes it addicting. The blood jar is also given a place of prominence as it finally is broken by the Spook to bind the Fiend in the end. (Big Spoiler)! Tom's skill seems to be not very special in the beginning of the book but as soon as he gets the 'Destiny Blade' from Callan, a legendary Irish hero as he ventures in he 'otherworld' and cuts of the head of the Morrigan. I think the Celtic witch and the character of Thin Shaun were really unnecessary and just were an unnecessary addition in the plot but I have realized that it is due to them that suddenly Alice gets imprisoned by the Fiend. Getting to the third arc, the recurring appearance of Grimalkin just thralls me. She's deadly, she's dark, she's a rebel and she's so skilled and talented with the blade its just great to have her back in the series. She is a valuable ally to the Apprentice-master duo and is may be the only reason which the Fiend gets bind at the end. Another prominent thing after getting the 'Destiny Blade' is that Tom is not able to halt time completely, much thanks to Mam and Grimalkin for training him and that really amazes me and adds another spice to the plot. The story, the characters, the emotions are depicted to naturally that they almost feel real which makes you want to read more and more. I wouldn't give you much idea about Pan and the otherworld but I would say that you read these selective passages slowly, taking in all the magical words that you can and give yourself a nice treat. We see a lot of new weapons, like the chain of silver spears and nails, the location of the dragons lair and immense pits all for binding the Fiend. Tom really seems experienced and almost a Spook by the end of the book, his time is coming. Its really great to see him grow so much from the start of the series. I would say that the Spook and Alice don't play a major role in the book. But Alice steals the spotlight the end of the book as she escapes the 'Dark Domain' of the Fiend after she goes through unimaginable torcher and horrors. She is a completely different personality with a growth spurt in her malevolence. She is physiologically and psychologically shaken and ever her hair turn white, she eats chickens raw and uses terrifying spells. Alice has surely changed and really broken my heart. I had hopes from her but stories twist and turn and sometimes break your heart.. I really feel sorry for Alice, even though she is just a storybook character she feels so realistic and natural. At the end of the book, things look good and Tom gains a lot of new knowledge about previously unknown servants of the dark. The end is approaching. A very realistic, unimaginable, addicting, magical, and a heart wrenching book that will surely amaze young readers. Nice Reading!
Tom fights the fiend with the destiny blade and manages to bind him but not able to kill him yet
It's great to read this book an to see all the new dangers that awaited tom ward in the island of Ireland
loving this series - expensive but very nice
Very exciting! Tom's becoming the Spook he is meant to be and will get much help from the Destiny Blade. Alice is also changing, but is it for the good or the bad?
The spooks destiny book eight of the wardstone chronicles . Am so enjoying this series they r so addictive !

Crash Nicole Williams Books

I really liked the first installment... this one, not so much. I fell in love with Jude and Lucy in the first book so was excited for their story to continue. Unfortunately, as much as a piece of me enjoyed reading about their lives after the first book, I am left wondering whether the author should have just stopped with the first book. A plus was that you could still feel the chemistry between them at times. However, it really just fell flat for me overall. Too many of the situations seemed overly contrived, and I think the author could have put a bit more thought into them and the plot over all. The situation with the cheerleader that "gets in the way" is actually just more annoying than anything... and I actually found myself irritated with the author for her lack of research in this department. While I understand what the author was trying to do with the whole "spirit sister" thing, it just didn't make sense and was too unbelievable. This would never happen in a real-life situation. At most schools college cheerleaders are actually discouraged from even fraternizing with the players, much less doing their laundry. Which is just absurd. If would have been munch more believable had it been a "sorority big-sister" or team manager or something. The other thing that irritated me was Lucy's continued treatment of Jude. At times I felt that she really didn't deserve him... I think the author took this line in the plot too far. It was also no longer believable. I also wish that the author would have spent more time on their shared troubled past. This really could have been the major issue rather than the highly contrived, under-researched, and over-played pseudo-issues that seem to plague the couple needlessly. Overall, I'm disappointed because this could have been a great continuation of the story of two characters I fell in love with in book one... but alas, it ended up just falling short.
Crash Nicole Williams Books Reviews

Clash moves Lucy and Jude from the Highschool to the College scene. They are separated by a five hour drive and a canyon of relationship problems. All of the issues these two had in Crash, lack of trust, lots of temper, major jealousy...all still in effect and somewhat magnified in Clash.

Jude is playing out his full ride football scholarship, hanging with fellow players and overly interested cheerleaders. While Lucy is balancing studies and dance and hoping to keep Jude's anger issues in check. When Jude is assigned a 'spirit sister' to make his campus life easier, it's Lucy who loses her cool and her trust in Jude.

I've seen many comments from others about how unreasonably Lucy reacts to the things happening in Jude's life. She jumps to conclusions and does not put blind faith in Jude. I understand those points but Jude never really trusts Lucy either. If he did, he would have been more forthcoming and honest with her. I love Jude as a character, though he really needs to chill the hell out, but he's not without some pretty major faults in this edition of the Jude/ Lucy love saga. I love that he feels fiercely, be it love or anger.

Lucy really is just a wreck. She has some fairly large life events happening and Jude complicates all of them for her. I thought many of her decisions were somewhat childish and based solely on fear. But other decisions she made were not without a healthy dose of thought. I can't fault her for those.

Clash is another roller coaster ride, exactly what you would expect from these two love birds. You'll experience tears, anger, hate, love, sorrow...you name it. Clash is a heart-breaker of a novel. I enjoyed it and will continue with the series but am hoping for a big injection of maturity in the third installment.
I'm writing a review of the entire trilogy, which I loved as a whole, because I think books 2 and 3 are significantly better than the first. No, these books are not contenders for the Pulitzer Prize, nor are they mind-twisters, brain-benders, educational, or breaking any literary boundaries. But they are FUN, passionate, sexy, and romantic. The second 2 books even contain some particularly insightful and meaningful observations about love and relationships (not to mention several hot sex scenes ;). As a jaded, cynical, overeducated, nearly-32-year-old woman who should probably be reading something more "intelligent" and advanced outside of work (booorrrriiiinngg), and who avoids sappy romance novels because they're unrealistic and contrary to pretty much everything I've experienced with men, this trilogy cut through my romance-raincloud and steel-encircled-heart-and-soul. The trilogy shows how both men and women can (and do) act stupidly even if they're head-over-heels in love and easily self-destruct a relationship, and there are also a multitude of outside factors that can rip through a relationship. Basically... all odds are against having an amazing relationship. BUT love CAN prevail if the man and woman accept this problem, want each other bad enough, and will constantly work at it. One of my favorite excerpts from the trilogy, and which sums up the main premise of the books, is

"You're letting the fairy tales you grew up with cloud your mind. Love isn't easy. Especially the really good kind. It's difficult, and you'll want to rip your hair out just as many days as you'll feel the wind at your back. . . . But it's worth it. It's worth fighting for. Don't let what isn't real blind you to what is. Life isn't perfect, we aren't perfect, so why should we expect love to be? . . . Love is what brings you together, Lucy. But it's the blood, sweat, and tears of hard work that keeps you together, . . . Love isn't just about flowers, candlelight, and romance, sweetheart. It's hard work, and trust, and tears, and misery. But at the end of each day, if you can still look at the person at your side and can't imagine anyone else you'd rather have there, the pain and heartache and the ups and downs of love are worth it."
But all the same, I will always love Lucy and Jude.

Just Between You and Me A Novel about Losing Fear and Finding God Women of Faith Thomas Nelson Jenny B Jones 9781595548511 Books

After reading and falling in love with the first two installments of Jenny B. Jones's Katie Parker series earlier this year, I was super excited to score one of her other books during an ebook sale. Although I didn't quite like this book as much as In Between and On the Loose, it's still full of Jones's southern sass and charm.

The book centers around Maggie Montgomery, who works on a film crew for a travel show. When Maggie receives a call from her estranged father requesting her to return to her hometown ASAP, she's faced with the dilemma to choose between putting her family or her career first. But, is this the career she really wants? What will God show her once she returns home?

Highlights:
The Humor: When I picked up this book, I totally hoped for the same kind of humor Jones delivered in the Katie Parker series, and I'm happy to say this novel kept me laughing throughout.

Discussing Mental Illness: I admire that this book touched on mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and depression, and what can happen when those conditions are not properly dealt with. Maggie's sister, Allison, takes narcotic drugs to numb her pain, wreaking havoc on her ten-year-old daughter's life. In this day and time, with issues such as these becoming more prominent in society, I applaud the author for addressing overcoming these struggles (or dealing with family members struggling this way) from a Christian standpoint.

The Biblical Messages: I enjoyed the sermon Maggie's pastor gave on Jonah where he emphasized how we as Christians run from our fear of where God's trying to take us. At this time in my life, it greatly resonates with me.

Lowlights:
Predictability: Unlike the Katie Parker series, this novel reminded me more of a Hallmark-type story, where the girl with a big-time job comes back to her small hometown, meets her dream guy, and saves the day. After being forced to watch dozens of Hallmark movies by my momma (one is playing in the background as I type this XD), this plot structure is all too predictable for me now, and I felt more could have been done to make it more compelling.

The Characters: Probably in part to the predictable plot, I didn't like the characters very much. At times, they were entertaining, but for the most part, they gave off a two-dimensional vibe.

Editing: In my Kindle copy, I noticed several typos and formatting errors. In most cases, I don't point this out in reviews, but this was published by a major publishing house, which has the resources to prevent this.
Jenny B. Jones is AMAZING! Her novels are inspirational, uplifting, romantic, and entertaining.

I recently read and adored Save the Date by Jenny B. Jones. Immediately after completing Save the Date, I purchased Jenny B. Jones' other adult Christian fiction novel, Just Between You and Me A Novel of Losing Fear and Finding God. I loved Save the Date, but I have to say that I loved Just Between You and Me even more.

Just Between You and Me was a hilarious and romantic story that delivered some relatable, relevant, and powerful messages. This novel focused on how fear can hold people back, how God should be the one running our lives, and how people get too busy in their lives and forget about what's important, like family and God.

All of the characters in this novel, even the supporting characters, were sensational!!

Maggie, the main character, was hilarious and relatable. She's a driven, independent woman whose life is centered around her career as a cinematographer. She never planned on returning to her hometown, helping raise her sister's daughter, or falling in love. She had her plan, but God had a plan of His own.

I absolutely adored Riley, Maggie's niece. Her sarcastic personality and her mischievous behavior cracked me up. She's a wild child; she's known for putting bubbles in the town fountain, gluing her substitute teacher to a chair, skipping school, running away, and beating up bullies. Her snarky comments and rebellious actions were hilarious; however, the motivations behind her actions weren't funny at all. Acting out is how Riley copes with the pain and insecurity from being neglected and abandoned by her mother. Riley made me laugh, but her situation broke my heart. She had an extremely hard life for a young child, and there were many times when I just wanted to wrap my arms around her and protect her.

Maggie and Connor's relationship was perfection! I loved their witty banter, their initial love-hate attraction, Maggie's nerd comments, their late night adventures, and their slow but steady friendship. They have a beautiful story; it's definitely worth reading )

I gave Just Between You and Me A Novel of Losing Fear and Finding God by Jenny B. Jones 5 STARS. This novel was phenomenal; it was a sweet romance with entertaining characters and a moving plot. I have zero complaints! I recommend this novel to all adults who enjoy adult Christian fiction. I can see myself re-reading this story down the road, and I look forward to reading any Christian fiction novel Jenny B. Jones writes in the future.

-XOXO
READING, EATING & DREAMING

FOR MORE REVIEWS CHECK OUT MY BLOG ON BLOGSPOT READING, EATING & DREAMING I WAS BLAIR WALDORF
I thought Connor was a bully. He was verbally pushy and he ridiculed Maggie throughout the book, especially in the beginning when she returned to Ivy. I don't enjoy humor when it's at the expense of another person . I have read many of Jenny B Jones books and loved them, but I did not enjoy this one. Sorry!
I found myself smiling many times because of the interesting and humorous phrasing in this book. This story was captivating and very hard to put down. It took quite a while to figure out what was really going on with Maggie and her family.
Conner was like a repeated breath of fresh air, and I was amazed at how long he put up with Maggie.
I also enjoyed how throughout the story Maggie was growing and becoming much more human and helpful not only to her niece but to her best friend.
I could not stop reading the last chapter because there was so many problems that were revealed throughout the book that were resolved in that final chapter - Maggie remembering what really happened when her mother died - Maggie overcoming her dreadful fear of water - her realization of what was really important to her and her determination to go after it - and, of course, her reconciliation with Conner.
I also really appreciated the way Maggie's understanding of the love and guidance of God grew throughout the book.

Fanny Dream Picture Puffins Caralyn Buehner Mark Buehner 9780142500606 Books

I first came across this book when I looked up the reviews of Crystal Kendrick, after she wrote a one-star review of another one of my favorite books, Smoky Mountain Rose: An Appalachian Cinderella. I know this might sound ugly, but because she wrote a negative review of a book I have really liked for over a decade, I thought, well, if she doesn't like this book either, maybe I should get it and read it for myself. I will say that, in a way, this book is a little sad. Fanny gives up her dream of marrying a prince (or the mayor's son), but by the end of the story, you can see that she actually realized the husband she had was a true prince. Yes, dreams are good. But, there comes a point, when we all have to grow up and realize that 99.9% are never going to live in a fairytale castle and marry a prince. If you are only 5 feet tall, you eventually have to wake up and realize that you're probably not going to become a professional basketball player. That's life. That's reality. I think fairytales are fine, but I do also think that kids should be shown some realism too rather than going through childhood with everyone always telling them they can do anything they want and then hitting adulthood and having reality smack them in the head. As for criticizing it because Fanny is described as stout and plain, well, most of us aren't movie-star gorgeous like the heroines of fairytales, right? Isn't that part of the problem today, that everyone thinks they have to measure up to the looks of models and actors? If any story is going to be criticized, shouldn't it be the fairytales that paint a rosy picture that we should be sweet and beautiful (and of course, have perfect soprano voices) and we'll live in a big castle with a handsome prince? That's not realistic. I think this story is sweet and a refreshing change from the typical "happily ever after" stories. Also, this story doesn't end with the main characters getting married and going off into the sunset. Fanny's life is just beginning with the wedding. The house burns down at one point, but they pick themselves up and start over again. That's real life! Great lesson for kids and adults from this book.

Fanny Dream Picture Puffins Caralyn Buehner Mark Buehner 9780142500606 Books Reviews

This is a great children's book, and every girl, teen, and woman needs to read it. I bought this for a grand-daughter, and now she loves it, too. Especially in a day of "princesses," this story is refreshing, funny, and true to life.
Fanny is a hardworking girl with dreams of being a princess. She settles (or not) for a marriage to a young (non-prince) hardworking man. After years of marriage her fairy god-mother finally arrives with the ability to make her dreams come true. Then Fanny realizes that life is just as she wants it to be. Thus proving that husbands that work and care for home and family are really better than any prince charming.
This book is really charming. It was a little to wordy for my four year old but we will keep reading it because the message is so wonderful!
Great Book. Different spin of traditional fairy tales
Fanny's dream is a great story for kids. It teaches them to make hard choices and to recognize that dreams are often reachable through love, hard work and kindness, rather than through a fairy godmother. Fanny, herself, doesn't run into the usual Cinderella fairytale. She's not a "pretty girl" that just needs to be cleaned up nice for the king's ball. She's an every woman who dreams of marrying someon great and having a great life... and comes to realize that fancy gowns and capitalistic royal fantasies don't necessarily make everyone happy.
I would recommend this book to any child, male or female. Although it is nice to have a woman as a main character who doesn't fit into any televised stereotypes.
Fanny's Dream (Picture Puffins)

A wonderfully illustrated story that has a powerful moral. We often have big dreams and wishes that are beyond the realm of reality. My Mom used to warn me, 'be careful what you pray for'. Fanny had a dream to marry a prince and have a life of ease and luxury, waited on hand and foot. But the reality was that she married a simple farmer, just like her. They had a good marriage full of happiness, but also a life of hard work and the occasional disaster. Although she did not marry the tall, dark, handsome prince, she felt that her life was 'close enough, close enough'. I purchased a book for each of my 6 children as a Christmas gift, and labeled them 'Marriage Manual'.
This has everything I want from a picture book. Humour, meaning, fun to read aloud, takes repeated reading without getting tired... and there are hidden shapes in the clouds and the puddles! We had such fun finding those.

As for this not giving a good message (one-star reviewer said this) the message isn't that you shouldn't follow your dreams, the message I took from it is that sometimes what you dream of isn't what you actually want at all. Fanny would've been miserable as the Mayor's wife; and, as she says in the end SPOILER ALERT! she got her prince anyway.

LOVE IT.
Amazing book. If you haven't read it you should. It not only teaches a great life lesson, but the pictures are a lot of fun. My little two year old loves finding the dog in each picture and will actually sit through the entire book.
I first came across this book when I looked up the reviews of Crystal Kendrick, after she wrote a one-star review of another one of my favorite books, Smoky Mountain Rose An Appalachian Cinderella.
Admittedly, I did not "read" the book rather listened to it on my long travels to my military weekend duties. I was't able to finish during one drill weekend and found myself thinking about the book and almost hoping that drill weekend would return so that I could finish the great book. As was the case with his first book, Brandon Mull use of adjectives and imagery words was superb. I was engrossed in a fantasy world were I felt looking outside my car window with a little magical milk that I too have seen the wondrous creatures. The book even had a turn that I just didn't see coming....lets just say that the second I finished the book I ordered the next book for my next military weekend. Great read for the young but even the older (I'm 32) can find great enjoyment from the book.

Fablehaven Rise of the Evening Star Brandon Mull Books Reviews

This is one of my boys' favorite books and is one of the reasons that my struggling reader has started to enjoy reading (HOORAY!!!). I took one star off though because the page numbers are missing from the Edition. We purchased the Book of Imagination which has questions related to the page numbers, and it's impossible to complete the questions without page numbers (
***NOTE MY REVIEWS OFTEN CONTAIN SPOILERS***

It's been a year since Kendra and the fairies saved Fablehaven from Muriel and her demon. While Kendra and Seth still think of returning, they never expected the creatures of Fablehaven to come to then. That's just what happens when a kobold posing as an attractive classmate enrolls in Kendra's class at school. With the school year almost over and no way to reach Grandpa the children must figure out how to deal with the creature on their own. Unfortunately not all those offering help are really on their side and in their quest to rid the school of the kobold Seth unknowingly unleashes a demon determined to devour him. The children are soon whisked away to Fablehaven but will the reserve's protections be enough to save Seth from his pending doom? And are all the dangers really outside the gates?

You know I debated a while on the rating for this. I initially intended not to give this book anything higher than three stars simply because even though the action begins soon I had a heck of a time getting into this novel. It took me four sittings to read this book and while that may not sound like much for me it really is. If I'm reading alone which I am most of the time if a book grabs me the only way I wouldn't finish it in one sitting is if I was so exhausted I was falling asleep standing up. For example I never picked up a Harry Potter book until the fifth novel was already released. I borrowed the first five from a cousin and didn't sleep for two days while devouring all five in that time period. I read Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers Trilogy in one sitting and the first three novels in Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series in one sitting. Actually, with that it was the first four if you count Winter's Passage. The reason I'm able to do this blog is that most of the time I can read the book in a couple hours, write the review in about 20 to 30 minutes send it to Ed to post and go on about my day. Of course that speed only comes if a book grips me. Most nonfiction novels will take me weeks to read because I have trouble making it through chapters without falling asleep. For it to have taken four sitting for me to finish this book tells you I really did have a difficult time getting into the book. What saved this novel from receiving a lower rating than its predecessor is its spectacular ending. Fablehaven-Rise of the Evening Star has the kind of ending that makes you sit back and go wow, I wasn't expecting that. And when you reach those scenes toward the end you can't turn the pages fast enough to discover what will happen next. While the ending of the finale of the first novel was excellent before it slowly wound down and lets you walk away calmly, with this second installment it was phenomenal and then over. There is no quite drive away from the preserve, there's just shock factor then lights out. Obviously that's one of my favorite parts of the novel but to really describe what happened to you in that scene and explain why the ending was enough to bump my rating up to four stars it would ruin the effect of said ending. This is one of those you'll know what I mean if you read the book moments.

Before I go into the portions of the novel I make an effort to comment on I want to make a comment on something I normally wouldn't mention. I'm not one who pays a ton of attention to illustrations, I'd rather rely on my own mental picture of things. The illustrations in this book however I found distracting and not in a good way. What particularly bothered me was the drawing of Kendra who is supposed to be almost fifteen. In the drawing I would peg her at maybe eight years old. If the novel is going to be illustrated the drawings should at least portray the characters somewhere near the age stated in the novel. It's distracting to see drawings of teenagers in which they appear to be small children. I'll give you that this is a middle grade novel and kids enjoy pictures but I would think this portrayal of Kendra was probably distracting to even those that enjoy pictures in their novels. I know this doesn't have anything to do with Mull's writing, but if a publisher is going to add illustrations to a book said illustrations should portray the characters as described in the novel. It left me wondering if the illustrator even read the novel.

While the plot was well written, interesting and proceeded in a logical order, something about the opening that I can't quite put my finger on didn't grip me in the way it was meant to. This novel basically gives you action from page one so it should have been extremely fast paced, but to me the pacing came across as quite slow. I really can't explain the why of it, but if someone else knows what I mean and could clarify for me it would be greatly appreciated. Like the first novel it does cater to the younger reader and while adults may enjoy a onetime read, I don't see them reading it over and over the way a child would. However since the novel is a middle grade novel that's probably a positive attribute of the work. This is the kind of book you give to your 8-12 year old that likes to read. I personally plan to pass the series to my soon to be eleven year old daughter, the only one of my children who shares my love of reading. I think what made this novel harder to get into than the first novel is that in the first novel Mull sort of slowly led us into the world of Fablehaven through Kendra's eyes. With his mostly slow paced style of writing easing into the world and wrapping it around a reader is an excellent method of gripping the reader. I don't feel jumping right into the action without that lead in works for him as a writer. One thing I can say about the plot is that nothing was really predictable. Every scene was unexpected from the very first shocker of a kobold walking into Kendra's classroom. I was just as surprised as Kendra when I learned who the villain of the tale was and of course as stated above I was shocked by the ending. Each surprise made sense as Mull explained it but it certainly wasn't how you expected the novel to progress.

As I believe I mentioned in my previous review Kendra and Seth are memorable characters however they really needed more fleshing in the first novel. In this novel these leading characters got a little more flesh on their bones than in the first though we still didn't get a lot of insight into other characters. I don't think this matters as much to a child reader as it does to an adult so I still think this will work for him. I don't remember being presented with many intricate characters in the books I read as a kid and I still loved reading them, so I don't think this is so much a negative trait, more another feature marking the book as a novel meant for children. One thing I will mention though about the characters is that Mull himself seems to sometimes forget the ages of his characters when he brings us into their minds. Kendra comes across much younger than almost 15 at points, though I will say Seth seems to fit nicely with the average 12 year old boy. I think what needs to be remembered is that on average girls mentally mature faster than boys and at times my almost eleven year old seems vastly more mature than Kendra who is in her teens. No Kendra isn't an adult and shouldn't come across as one, but she's missing that 14 going on 40 mindset which is common in girls her age. For me this detracted from Kendra's believability as a character. I don't know if this would be the case for a child reader since it's been a while since I've been a child. But I think even Kennedy would notice that Kendra is a bit immature on how she thinks of things. However one thing I did like in terms of maturity was that Seth did actually complain about sharing a room with Kendra in this novel which made that whole arrangement a little more realistic.

To get the entire feel for this novel I think the first novel in the series needs to be read before this one, only because you don't get that nice lead in to the world that you received in the original Fablehaven. I mean I guess it could work as a standalone, but you'd really be missing a lot if you didn't read the first book in the series.

Overall it's a good novel with more action than the first, in fact even though it came across with slow pacing the book is almost nonstop action filled with surprise. However like I've previously stated an adult may enjoy this novel once, but for the most part its audience is the middle grade reader. If you don't have kids to pass the book on to I recommend checking it out of your local library so that you can experience the adventure without having purchased a book you're probably not going to read more than once. If you do have kids who enjoy reading I will say it's money well spent, but not as much if you're just an adult reader of children's and young adult fiction.
Such a great author and series. We love anything written by Brandon Mull. I know that I can count on him to write books that I do not have to pre-read for content that I do not want my kids reading. His books are always clean. His characters always have strong morals, ethics, and values.

This was such a fun roller coaster adventure to read. Just like the first book in the series there are so many cool creatures to learn about and some great lessons to learn.
My husbamd and I originally purchased the first book in this series to read to our 5 year old son. He loves it, and I have found myself captivated by the story, as well. Although we are still two chapters away from finishing the first book together, as we read one chapter per day, I read ahead and had to purchase the second. I completed it in two days time. This series has it all-action, suspense, and thrilling plot twists! The story can be intense at times. However, my son constantly begs to read more, and the adventures found in Fablehaven have quickly become a part of our daily conversation. Seth and Kendra's adventures are all he talks about! I highly recommend this series! I can't wait to see what happens next, and after we finish this series, we will be exploring other titles by this spectacular author!
An imaginative and fresh view of a magical world around us. Written for a younger audience, it uses young heroes which seems unrealistic to an older "kid" like me, but I'm used to getting that in books and it still keeps the kids as kids with just a little stretch to be heroes. They are sufficiently believable and sufficiently interesting to read about. The best part, as I said above, is the author's take on how magic and magical creatures could be.
Admittedly, I did not "read" the book rather listened to it on my long travels to my military weekend duties. I was't able to finish during one drill weekend and found myself thinking about the book and almost hoping that drill weekend would return so that I could finish the great book. The author did an exceptional job writing this book and I can't wait to read her upcoming novels! The fact that this is her first book and she produced it without a publishing house or editor is astounding to me! Her ability to develop her characters and paint the scenes with such vivid details is astounding and I see a very bright future for Hunter. I can't wait to read the next book!
This book is amazing. The characters are real and so is the plot. It's easy to read and keeps you on your toes.
This writer is so incredibly talented. The characters are so well developed...it is so easy to become personally invested in each and every one of them. The book just oozes with the effort and talent this writer put into each word she chose. I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on even more written by this author. E. L. James and others alike have major competition coming their way with Ms. Du Pre. It won't be long before we see Hunter Du Pre's work displayed on the shelves of any and all bookstores. If you're looking for a book with well-rounded characters, addicting scenes of passion, and a story line that immediately draws you in and won't let go, anything written by this author is exactly what you're looking for.
Yes a proud father i am gonna say it's great, but I'm proud of the effort and creativity. If the next two show this same characteristic we'll all be in for a treat. Keep on trucking, how about some art work!
The fact that this is her first book and she produced it without a publishing house or editor is astounding to me! Her ability to develop her characters and paint the scenes with such vivid details is astounding and I see a very bright future for Hunter. I can't wait to read the next book!
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this relatively short novel. A little romance, a little intrigue and a big adventure...all incapsulated in this novel. Unlike many of the writers in the 1900's the author uses his words sparingly.
